Is conventional wisdom holding you back? Maybe you NEED this Mindset Shift!
One of the most dangerous habits a business owner can fall into when making big decisions is relying on conventional wisdom.
History has shown, however, that even the industry “experts” make this crucial mistake time and time again. Here are a few examples:
“Everything that can be invented has been invented.”
- Charles Duell, U.S. Office of Patents Commissioner, 1899
“Novelty is always welcome, but talking pictures are just a fad.”
- Irving Thalberg, MGM movie producer, 1927
“I think there might be a world market for maybe five computers.”
- Thomas Watson, Chairman of IBM, 1943
Nobody has a crystal ball into the future. We are all prone to making mistakes. That being said, these examples of conventional wisdom gone wrong have two key things in common:
- They’re based on deeply held assumptions and beliefs about how their industry, society, and the world around them works.
- They were all put forth by people that had achieved some level of recognition in their respective fields, and so nobody questioned the validity of their statements.
Now, look at how you market your business…
Look at all the processes, systems, and methods you continue to hold onto because you’ve “always done it this way,” or “nobody has created a better way to do it.”
The world around you changes quickly.
20 years ago, Google search ads were unheard of. By 2010, they were common practice in digital marketing.
10 years ago, professionals scoffed at the idea of marketing on Facebook. Soon after, Facebook was saturated with advertisers clawing through people’s newsfeeds for attention.
A couple of years ago, 68% of Consumers Used YouTube to Make Purchase Decisions
But…
Only 9% of Businesses Advertised on YouTube
People used to say YouTube was just a “hub for cat videos” not for Advertising Business.
As I finish typing this email, I’m reminded of those who can only look back on the ‘golden era’ of Google & Facebook ads before they became overpriced & overcrowded…
And think… “What If?”
Luckily enough for them, the world is cyclical. And YouTube has been stepping up to the plate.
Now ask yourself this question…
Are you going to let conventional “wisdom” dictate your business decisions?
OR are you going to challenge your assumptions and reap the rewards of innovation?
